character creation tutorial series begins…

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned a character tutorial series I was working on and I think that it’s about time that I got started posting some!

The character on the left is who we will be trying to recreate in 3D using blender.  I’ve named him Blake, just to give me an easy reference instead of saying “our character” all the time.  I’ve based him loosely on Robin from the Teen Titans cartoons series, but he is pretty much just a generic anime/manga style character.  In order to practice our inorganic modeling, I’ve also given him a cybernetic leg.  This is just a quick sketch, so the overall design may change as we go along through the series, but we’ll be aiming for a fairly low-poly anime/manga cartoon style character.

I’ve created a Vimeo channel specifically for the series and I’ve posted a real quick introduction video to better explain what I’m after.

Character Creation Tutorial Series Video Channel

I have a few videos done already, so I should be able to keep to my original intention of one video per week.  I’ll upload the first video tutorial towards the end of this week!

Go ahead and subscribe to the channel directly, or subscribe to my RSS feed here and get notified when new videos become available.

Trying to keep on the weekly schedule is also a great way for me to stay on top of the blog posting.  Along with releasing a new video every week, I’d also like to try to highlight a new topic each week in the blog.  This will be either a new website that I’ve found during the week, a new artist that has captured my attention that week, news stories related to the digital arts, or anything else that I think may be of interest to every one.  As a bonus this week I’ll do one today and one when I release the first video in a few days!

Computer Arts Website

The Computer Arts magazine website is a fantastic place to go for general information regarding the digital arts.  The website is brought to you by Future, who is the company that publishes Computer Arts magazine, along with 3D World and MacFormat.  The website highlights different aspects of the computer arts including news stories, interviews, tutorials, and competitions.  They focus on a wide range of topics related to the digital arts including but not limited to photography, graphic design, 3D, animation, web design, etc.  Check them at least once a week for new things!

    Hi Tim,
I’ve just looked at the intro for this series, WOW, this is gonna be a great series for any blender user from newb to experienced, I’m sure that we will learn a lot from it. I know it’s going to take a lot of time, work and effort from your part to put it together, so I want to thank you in advance for that.
Take care and happy blending 🙂
