In part 10 of Blake’s tutorial series we tackle the modeling of his bionic right leg.

Lots of new things this week!  We finish up the organic modeling this week and shift our thinking to inorganic, or solid surface modeling.  This is a different sort of beast, so we need some new thinking and some new tools to help us.  I introduce the boolean modifier and also the solidify modifier to help us model the upper metal section of the leg.  Along the way I also talk about creases and how to make the best looking creases on the corners of the metal.

The upper section of the cybernetic leg is basically a hollow metal cylinder with a few sections cut out of it.  There are a couple of different ways to cut holes in curved surfaces like this, but I decided on using the boolean modifier for this particular case.  Another way to do this is with the shrinkwrap modifier.  Jonathan Williamson does an excellent tutorial here of that technique that’s well worth checking out.

I really enjoyed doing this video.  It was a nice break from all the organic modeling that we’ve done.  The next couple of weeks we do some more new things to finish up the bionic leg and then model the eyes.  Let me know what you think!
