Vehicle Modeling Series…
So it’s been a little while since I’ve posted something that hasn’t been tutorial related! I’ve been fairly busy cranking out Blake’s tutorial series that I haven’t had much time to do much else, so that’s the reason behind that. Since the modeling part of Blake is finished however, I now have some time to do some other random things (fear not, I do plan on texturing, rigging, and animating him eventually though!).
One thing that I noticed during Blake’s modeling process was that I am fairly weak on solid surface modeling. We did a little bit with his bionic leg, but it’s something that I definitely want to work on more. This is pretty good timing on my part because the folks over at Blender Cookie just announced a Vehicle Modeling Series. I had planned to pre-order this, but as luck may have it (my luck of the Irish showing through on St. Patty’s Day!) I actually ended up winning a copy through their comment contest, sweet!
The series is a hardcore modeling exercise going through the creation of a sci-fi concept vehicle. The vehicle was designed by David Revoy, so of course it’s amazing, but I didn’t want to model the exact same vehicle. So I decided to play around this past weekend and come up with something for myself.
The image on the left is a fairly quick concept that I did with Alchemy. I had a rough idea of what I was looking for, so used some pull shapes to come up with something a little more definite. The middle image shows the initial shapes and the top and bottom show the side and top silhouettes.
I may leave it like this for a model sheet, but I’d like to do a more detailed model sheet in Gimp this weekend. I’ll be sure to post up a WIP if I get one that I like!
